African-American Antiqued

I used African fabrics to create this piece in the style of an old fashioned American rag rug.  I asked people for two years to stand on it in their muddied and snowy boots to give it some wear.  I washed it and mounted it on a raw silk ecru background.

African fabrics and African-Americans come in all colors.

Even though African-Americans are battered and torn, their resilient beauty still shines through.

This piece will be on display at the Ellison Center for the Arts, 64 St. Georg Street, Duxbury MA 02332-3812 starting February 3rd.
