I used African fabrics to create this piece in the style of an
old fashioned American rag rug. I asked people for two years
to stand on it in their muddied and snowy boots to give it
some wear. I washed it and mounted it on a raw silk ecru
background.
African fabrics and African-Americans come in all colors.
Even though African-Americans are battered and torn, their
resilient beauty still shines through.
This piece will be on display at the Ellison Center for the
Arts, 64 St. Georg Street, Duxbury MA 02332-3812 starting
February 3rd.
